Lanier Striper Club Scores "Big" With The Boating And Fishing Communities
As everyone knows, the latter half of 2011 was a year of minimal rainfall. Unfortunately, one of the damaging consequences of the drought was lack of safe access to the Lake by boaters. By November only one courtesy dock owned by the Corps was in the water, and it was on the western side of the Lake.
Members and officers of the Club determined that it would be appropriate to meet with the Corps to determine what opportunities were available for safe and easy access to the Lake. Accordingly, Dan Saknini was contacted to determine whether he would meet with the Corps and inquire as to whether we would be able to move one or more courtesy docks.
Dan Saknini, member and former president of the Club, negotiated with several vendors and the Corps to relocate the courtesy dock at Balus. In its history, the Corps had never agreed to allow any private groups to relocate one or more of its courtesy docks. During this process the Corps recognized that our Club was highly organized and well suited to professionally accomplish this important mission. We have two existing contracts with the Corps: maintain its pond and repair and maintain ten courtesy docks. Within the context of these two contracts, the Corps highly rated our services and ability to complete all contract work in a professional, safe, and timely fashion. In consideration of this, the Corps gave the Club permission to move the dock.
The club assigned the project to Joe Kuhr who negotiated with Marne Specialties, Inc. and within five days, the courtesy dock was in the water. Concrete pavers and wood shavings were placed on the shore to help prevent boaters from tracking mud to their boats. Pleasure boaters and fishermen were able to access the Lake more safely. In the past week, Joe and a group of volunteers moved the dock closer to the shoreline as an additional foot of water was added to the Lake.
In conclusion, the project was completed in a timely manner and its related cost was within the budget for the job! The completion of the project allows easy and safe access to both the north and south ends of the Lake and to all pleasure boaters and fishermen.
Lanier Striper Club Assists with Coast Guard Auxiliary Emergency Drill on Lake Lanier
On Wednesday, May 18th a major event took place on Lake Lanier. A major emergency simulation and drill run by the Coast Guard Auxiliary was conducted at Van Pugh North with participation by the Department of Natural Resources, The Corps of Engineers, The Sheriff's Departments of two counties, and their Fire and Rescue Divers. The purpose of the drill was to coordinate the involvement of all groups to and practice skills necessary to deal with an emergency situation on the Lake. The Lanier Striper Club was asked to take part in the event by providing and cooking a hamburger / hotdog lunch after the event. We fed approximately 100 people involved in the simulation. Several of our members volunteered their time to help with the event: Jack Scales, one of our newest members, and his wife stepped up and handled all the shopping for the food and condiments, also helping to coordinate and prepare the garnishes. Rick Rzemieniewski was our lead chef and did a fantastic guiding all of the assistants including, Ron Howard, Jeff Gruver, Jerry Bagwell and myself. It was a great honor for us to be involved with this event, thanks to one of our own, Capt. Chuck Kizina with the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
From an angler's perspective, what an eye opener it was to witness how everything takes place in an emergency and the myriad of details involved in the communication and coordination of all the parties involved. I think we may often take for granted all the effort and preparation involved in the preparedness of first responders, whether involving a vessel on fire, a drowning or other emergency on the lake. I wish more of us were able to see this massive effort. Thanks to all our agencies involved in this effort for what they do. Thanks also to our LSC members who gave their time and energy to support this drill. - Dan Saknini
